I wanted to write down a quick blurb about caring for polymer clay jewellery - whether you've purchased a piece or are thinking about it - maybe you're wondering how do I care for it?
From my experience working with polymer clay for about a year now, I've found that polymer clay is WAY more durable than I expected. In fact, it's far more durable than crystals (I mean, crystals are pretty much glass and should be treated as such..)
Remember this necklace? (it's mine!! HAHAH!!)
Well I was at Edmonton Expo and it got dropped on the hard concrete floor .... and wouldn't you believe it's fine!
Now I'm not saying go around dropping crystal necklaces on the ground - but - in the event that it does maybe slip through your fingers and bonk the ground, chances are the stones will be damaged before the clay.
I recently left some pendants outside in the cold Alberta winter, and then brought them in, tugged them and they didn't budge out of the clay. When they warmed up, again I gave a good few tugs and they didn't budge!
The leaves MAY lift, if you play with them and get your nails under them. I do my best to make sure everything is snug, and if I notice lifting I will usually put a bit of super glue under there to smooth it out.
Clay is porous! This means do not put clear nail polish or other varnish on it (I recently made this mistake with Liquitex - OOPS!)
From what I've read, polymer clay is relatively waterproof - But I would refrain from wearing your polymer clay crystal jewellery in water to protect the metals!
Over all I've been pleasantly surprised with polymer clay as an art medium and especially as a jewellery medium. Very durable and customizable. I wear the necklace shown above very often, and handle it often. It's always with me in my backpack!
So if you've been checking out my pieces but wondering " hmm. isn't that pretty fragile? " I hope I've answered that question for you! Don't be afraid of the clay :)
